Monday, July 14th
On Monday, July 14th, Rachel Shattuck received the endorsement of the Progressive Democrats of America Chicago Chapter. Following the meeting, Rachel sent this letter to PDA members, and we want to share it with you as well.Dear Friends,
I attended the Chicago Progressive Democrats of America meeting on Monday, July 14th where a member asked a question that I feel deserves some follow-up. I was asked what State Reps I look up to or admire, and I gave a pretty dodging non-answer. That is not my standard operating procedure, so I wanted to take a moment to clarify.
The problem is that I don't look up to any of our State Reps, my future colleagues, in Illinois. My heroes include the likes of Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Desmond Tutu, Paul Kagame, Muhammad Yunus, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Wangari Maathai, and Robert F. Kennedy. The people I look up to are American and world leaders who dared to believe, against all odds, that they could change things from the way they are into the way they should be. They are people who fought for freedom and equality and fairness, and who inspired many who followed them to stand up and do the same for what is right and just.
Now I'm not saying that there aren't current State Reps who also dare to believe in their dreams, but I am saying that my world view is not shaped by our Illinois State Legislature, rather my approach to life is shaped by courageous leaders of movements for change and the many committed individuals across the world that they have inspired to action.
Thank you for being a part of the progressive movement for change. I hope that you will join PDA Chicago and the 14th Congressional District PDA Chapter in supporting my campaign and encourage your friends to join you in the fight for the future, because the only way we are going to accomplish the kind of changes we all want and deserve is by becoming the change we want to see.
Sincerely,
Rachel Shattuck

On Saturday, June 28th at the First Annual Progressive Democrats of America - Illinois Conference 2008, Rachel Shattuck received the endorsement of the Progressive Democrats of America 14th Congressional District Chapter. Author and journalist David Sirota has said, "The way you are elected is how you govern."
Shattuck says, "I would like you to know that this campaign is all about The People. You are the reason I got involved in public policy and advocacy. I will work for you. I would like you to know that we are running a progressive grassroots campaign, knocking on doors and talking to people everyday, because you are the special interests that matter to me in this election."

The first public hearing of the Health Care For All Illinois Act (HB 311) was held this weekend at Simeon Career Academy in Chicago. Chief Sponsor, Rep. Mary Flowers, hosted the event where citizens gave testimony of their experience with the broken health care system of today.
The Health Care For All Illinois Act is a universal health care system for Illinois, where everyone would benefit from the Illinois Health Services Program’s ability to set fees for care provided by doctors and collectively bargain with drug companies. Shattuck gave testimony on the uninsured and underinsured population of young people and spoke about the benefits of this bill for residents of the 49th district.
Click here to learn more about the Health Care For All Illinois Act and Rachel's plan to make sure every resident of the 49th district has health care.
The next public hearing is scheduled for Saturday, June 28th 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at McHenry County College Extension in Crystal Lake. For more information email us at info@rachelshattuck.com.

I look forward to meeting you and your family at the next parade or event this summer, or who knows - maybe I will be knocking on your door soon. I have had so many great conversations with voters! What an exciting year for our ongoing discussion about what is right for people!

In an article on the Progress Illinois Blog, Adam Doster writes, "A new generation of young progressives is eager to follow in Simon’s footsteps. Frustrated by the destructive and divisive politics of the Bush-led GOP and tired of missed opportunities in Springfield, young people are increasingly running for state and local office. With a lot of work and a little luck, their vision for an invigorated Democratic Party focused on transparency and equity could be realized sooner rather than later."
Shattuck is featured in the article, along with other great young progressive candidates running for office in Illinois this year.

Saturday, April 26th
I have been out canvassing Dundee's 32nd precinct with volunteers this week, and I have news for you from the field. Something very exciting is happening in the 49th District this year! I have talked with first time voters, young people, families with children in local schools, and seniors. All of the voters I have met this week have something in common. You are ready to see new leadership in Springfield!
Whether you are concerned with rising prices and lost jobs, education funding and health care costs, or renewable energy sources and environmental awareness - we are all tired of our elected officials not hearing our concerns. We are tired of them spending too much time fighting with each other when we wish they would work together to solve issues that affect us every day in our communities.
I want you to know that I hear your concerns, and I am going to keep coming out and listening to voters' concerns across the 49th. Next Saturday we will be hosting a canvass volunteer training at the campaign headquarters in West Dundee. If you would like to join us please fill out a volunteer form or email info@rachelshattuck.com. This is your chance to become the change your want to see!
Thank you to the volunteers for all your hard work!
Rachel

A message from Rachel
I am running for State Representative because I believe the people deserve a voice in Springfield. I would be honored to represent you, your family, and our community. I believe in public service and community service, and that’s why I was planning to serve my country by joining the Peace Corps in a health and business non-profit advising position in Africa this year. When I was asked to run for State Representative I decided to put my Peace Corps work aside for the time being because I believe we have just as much work to do here at home. I hope that I can provide the kind of leadership that inspires all of us to become more involved in our communities. When we become involved in the political process and make sure our voices are heard, we begin to see the change we seek. What you have to say really does matter, and I am listening. Together we can achieve the change you want to see!
